Sam Keenan is a local Cantabrian who started playing tennis at the young age of 5. Sam quickly showed promise as a gifted junior and progressed through the coaching ranks and then on to competitive interclub and tournament competition. Sam represented his club and region with distinction and progressed to the elite Premier grade at an early age.
It was towards the end of his schooling that Sam decided he wished to embark on a career as a Tennis Coaching Professional. To aid in his pursuit, Sam enrolled at Lincoln University and completed a sports management degree before getting “itchy feet” and heading overseas to hone his craft as a teaching professional.
Sam first went to the UK where he worked under David Lloyd, before heading to the US where his coaching talent was identified as a “must have” by a prestigious coaching company owned and operated by former touring professional, Cliff Drysdale. At Cliff Drysdale Tennis Inc. Sam further developed his skills and spent the best part of ten years coaching in various locations throughout the US.
It was in 2015 that Sam heard of a vacancy that was to arise as Head Coach at Elmwood Tennis, providing an opportunity for him to “come home” and apply the knowledge he had learnt overseas to the coaching programmes at Elmwood. Sam subsequently applied, and with an enviable coaching resume now behind him, Sam was appointed unanimously to the role.
Sam has enjoyed many successes, junior numbers have increased, the coaching standard and offerings have improved, and he has played a vital role in the development of both junior and senior interclub.
We are very pleased to have Sam Keenan as the Elmwood Tennis Head Coach and look forward to a long and successful association.
